           Levinwasinsufferablyboredthateveningwiththeladies;hewasstirredashehadneverbeenbeforebytheideathatthedissatisfactionhewasfeelingwithhissystemofmanaginghislandwasnotanexceptionalcase,butthegeneralconditionofthingsinRussia;thattheorganizationofsomerelationofthelaborerstothesoilinwhichtheywouldwork,aswiththepeasanthehadmethalf-waytotheSviazhskys’,wasnotadream,butaproblemwhichmustbesolved.Anditseemedtohimthattheproblemcouldbesolved,andthatheoughttotryandsolveit.

           Aftersayinggood-nighttotheladies,andpromisingtostaythewholeofthenextday,soastomakeanexpeditiononhorsebackwiththemtoseeaninterestingruininthecrownforest,Levinwent,beforegoingtobed,intohishost’sstudytogetthebooksonthelaborquestionthatSviazhskyhadofferedhim.Sviazhsky’sstudywasahugeroom,surroundedbybookcasesandwithtwotablesinitoneamassivewriting-table,standinginthemiddleoftheroom,andtheotheraroundtable,coveredwithrecentnumbersofreviewsandjournalsindifferentlanguages,rangedliketheraysofastarroundthelamp.Onthewriting-tablewasastandofdrawersmarkedwithgoldlettering,andfullofpapersofvarioussorts.

           Sviazhskytookoutthebooks,andsatdowninarocking-chair.

           “Whatareyoulookingatthere?”hesaidtoLevin,whowasstandingattheroundtablelookingthroughthereviews.

           “Oh,yes,there’saveryinterestingarticlehere,”saidSviazhskyofthereviewLevinwasholdinginhishand.
