           Onthedayofthewedding,accordingtotheRussiancustom(theprincessandDaryaAlexandrovnainsistedonstrictlykeepingallthecustoms),Levindidnotseehisbetrothed,anddinedathishotelwiththreebachelorfriends,casuallybroughttogetherathisrooms.ThesewereSergeyIvanovitch,Katavasov,auniversityfriend,nowprofessorofnaturalscience,whomLevinhadmetinthestreetandinsistedontakinghomewithhim,andTchirikov,hisbestman,aMoscowconciliation-boardjudge,Levin’scompanioninhisbear-hunts.Thedinnerwasaverymerryone:SergeyIvanovitchwasinhishappiestmood,andwasmuchamusedbyKatavasov’soriginality.Katavasov,feelinghisoriginalitywasappreciatedandunderstood,madethemostofit.Tchirikovalwaysgavealivelyandgood-humoredsupporttoconversationofanysort.

           “AmoredeterminedenemyofmatrimonythanyouIneversaw,”saidSergeyIvanovitch.
