           Whenhewasdressed,StepanArkadyevitchsprinkledsomescentonhimself,pulleddownhisshirt-cuffs,distributedintohispocketshiscigarettes,pocketbook,matches,andwatchwithitsdoublechainandseals,andshakingouthishandkerchief,feelinghimselfclean,fragrant,healthy,andphysicallyatease,inspiteofhisunhappiness,hewalkedwithaslightswingoneachlegintothedining-room,wherecoffeewasalreadywaitingforhim,andbesidethecoffee,lettersandpapersfromtheoffice.

           Hereadtheletters.Onewasveryunpleasant,fromamerchantwhowasbuyingaforestonhiswife’sproperty.Tosellthisforestwasabsolutelyessential;butatpresent,untilhewasreconciledwithhiswife,thesubjectcouldnotbediscussed.Themostunpleasantthingofallwasthathispecuniaryinterestsshouldinthiswayenterintothequestionofhisreconciliationwithhiswife.Andtheideathathemightbeledonbyhisinterests,thathemightseekareconciliationwithhiswifeonaccountofthesaleoftheforestthatideahurthim.

           Whenhehadfinishedhisletters,StepanArkadyevitchmovedtheoffice-papersclosetohim,rapidlylookedthroughtwopiecesofbusiness,madeafewnoteswithabigpencil,andpushingawaythepapers,turnedtohiscoffee.Ashesippedhiscoffee,heopenedastilldampmorningpaper,andbeganreadingit.

           StepanArkadyevitchtookinandreadaliberalpaper,notanextremeone,butoneadvocatingtheviewsheldbythemajority.
