           WhenVronskylookedathiswatchontheKarenins’balcony,hewassogreatlyagitatedandlostinhisthoughtsthathesawthefiguresonthewatch’sface,butcouldnottakeinwhattimeitwas.Hecameoutontothehighroadandwalked,pickinghiswaycarefullythroughthemud,tohiscarriage.HewassocompletelyabsorbedinhisfeelingforAnna,thathedidnoteventhinkwhato’clockitwas,andwhetherhehadtimetogotoBryansky’s.Hehadlefthim,asoftenhappens,onlytheexternalfacultyofmemory,thatpointsouteachsteponehastotake,oneaftertheother.Hewentuptohiscoachman,whowasdozingontheboxintheshadow,alreadylengthening,ofathicklimetree;headmiredtheshiftingcloudsofmidgescirclingoverthehothorses,and,wakingthecoachman,hejumpedintothecarriage,andtoldhimtodrivetoBryansky’s.Itwasonlyafterdrivingnearlyfivemilesthathehadsufficientlyrecoveredhimselftolookathiswatch,andrealizethatitwashalf-pastfive,andhewaslate.

           HereachedBryansky’s,spentfiveminutesthere,andgallopedback.Thisrapiddrivecalmedhim.
