           Happyfamiliesareallalike;everyunhappyfamilyisunhappyinitsownway.

           EverythingwasinconfusionintheOblonskys’house.ThewifehaddiscoveredthatthehusbandwascarryingonanintriguewithaFrenchgirl,whohadbeenagovernessintheirfamily,andshehadannouncedtoherhusbandthatshecouldnotgoonlivinginthesamehousewithhim.Thispositionofaffairshadnowlastedthreedays,andnotonlythehusbandandwifethemselves,butallthemembersoftheirfamilyandhousehold,werepainfullyconsciousofit.Everypersoninthehousefeltthattherewasnosenseintheirlivingtogether,andthatthestraypeoplebroughttogetherbychanceinanyinnhadmoreincommonwithoneanotherthanthey,themembersofthefamilyandhouseholdoftheOblonskys.Thewifedidnotleaveherownroom,thehusbandhadnotbeenathomeforthreedays.Thechildrenranwildalloverthehouse;theEnglishgovernessquarreledwiththehousekeeper,andwrotetoafriendaskinghertolookoutforanewsituationforher;theman-cookhadwalkedoffthedaybeforejustatdinnertime;thekitchen-maid,andthecoachmanhadgivenwarning.

           Threedaysafterthequarrel,PrinceStepanArkadyevitchOblonskyStiva,ashewascalledinthefashionableworldwokeupathisusualhour,thatis,ateighto’clockinthemorning,notinhiswife’sbedroom,butontheleather-coveredsofainhisstudy.
