           Thetemporarystable,awoodenshed,hadbeenputupclosetotheracecourse,andtherehismarewastohavebeentakenthepreviousday.Hehadnotyetseenherthere.

           Duringthelastfewdayshehadnotriddenheroutforexercisehimself,buthadputherinthechargeofthetrainer,andsonowhepositivelydidnotknowinwhatconditionhismarehadarrivedyesterdayandwastoday.Hehadscarcelygotoutofhiscarriagewhenhisgroom,theso-called“stableboy,”recognizingthecarriagesomewayoff,calledthetrainer.Adry-lookingEnglishman,inhighbootsandashortjacket,clean-shaven,exceptforatuftbelowhischin,cametomeethim,walkingwiththeuncouthgaitofjockey,turninghiselbowsoutandswayingfromsidetoside.

           Theywentintothelittleyardinfrontoftheshed.Astableboy,spruceandsmartinhisholidayattire,metthemwithabroominhishand,andfollowedthem.Intheshedtherewerefivehorsesintheirseparatestalls,andVronskyknewthathischiefrival,Gladiator,averytallchestnuthorse,hadbeenbroughtthere,andmustbestandingamongthem.
