           ThenewlyelectedmarshalandmanyofthesuccessfulpartydinedthatdaywithVronsky.

           VronskyhadcometotheelectionspartlybecausehewasboredinthecountryandwantedtoshowAnnahisrighttoindependence,andalsotorepaySviazhskybyhissupportattheelectionforallthetroublehehadtakenforVronskyatthedistrictcouncilelection,butchieflyinorderstrictlytoperformallthosedutiesofanoblemanandlandownerwhichhehadtakenuponhimself.Buthehadnotintheleastexpectedthattheelectionwouldsointeresthim,sokeenlyexcitehim,andthathewouldbesogoodatthiskindofthing.Hewasquiteanewmaninthecircleofthenobilityoftheprovince,buthissuccesswasunmistakable,andhewasnotwronginsupposingthathehadalreadyobtainedacertaininfluence.Thisinfluencewasduetohiswealthandreputation,thecapitalhouseinthetownlenthimbyhisoldfriendShirkov,whohadapostinthedepartmentoffinancesandwasdirectorofaflourishingbankinKashin;theexcellentcookVronskyhadbroughtfromthecountry,andhisfriendshipwiththegovernor,whowasaschoolfellowofVronsky’saschoolfellowhehadpatronizedandprotectedindeed.Butwhatcontributedmorethanalltohissuccesswashisdirect,equablemannerwitheveryone,whichveryquicklymadethemajorityofthenoblemenreversethecurrentopinionofhissupposedhaughtiness.
