           Theoldneglectedpalazzo,withitsloftycarvedceilingsandfrescoesonthewalls,withitsfloorsofmosaic,withitsheavyyellowstuffcurtainsonthewindows,withitsvasesonpedestals,anditsopenfireplaces,itscarveddoorsandgloomyreceptionrooms,hungwithpicturesthispalazzodidmuch,byitsveryappearanceaftertheyhadmovedintoit,toconfirminVronskytheagreeableillusionthathewasnotsomuchaRussiancountrygentleman,aretiredarmyofficer,asanenlightenedamateurandpatronofthearts,himselfamodestartistwhohadrenouncedtheworld,hisconnections,andhisambitionforthesakeofthewomanheloved.

           TheposechosenbyVronskywiththeirremovalintothepalazzowascompletelysuccessful,andhaving,throughGolenishtchev,madeacquaintancewithafewinterestingpeople,foratimehewassatisfied.HepaintedstudiesfromnatureundertheguidanceofanItalianprofessorofpainting,andstudiedmediævalItalianlife.MediævalItalianlifesofascinatedVronskythatheevenworeahatandflungacloakoverhisshoulderinthemediævalstyle,which,indeed,wasextremelybecomingtohim.
