           “Onthecontrary,thefinishisalwaysthebest.ButImustbegoing,”saidStepanArkadyevitch,gettingupforthetenthtime.

           “Oh,no,stayabit!”saidLevin,keepinghim.“Now,whenshallweseeeachotheragain?I’mgoingtomorrow.”

           “I’maniceperson!Why,that’sjustwhatIcamefor!Yousimplymustcometodinnerwithustoday.Yourbrother’scoming,andKarenin,mybrother-in-law.”

           “Youdon’tmeantosayhe’shere?”saidLevin,andhewantedtoinquireaboutKitty.HehadheardatthebeginningofthewinterthatshewasatPetersburgwithhersister,thewifeofthediplomat,andhedidnotknowwhethershehadcomebackornot;buthechangedhismindanddidnotask.“Whethershe’scomingornot,Idon’tcare,”hesaidtohimself.

           “Soyou’llcome?”

           “Ofcourse.”

           “Atfiveo’clock,then,andnoteveningdress.”

           AndStepanArkadyevitchgotupandwentdownbelowtothenewheadofhisdepartment.InstincthadnotmisledStepanArkadyevitch.Theterriblenewheadturnedouttobeanextremelyamenableperson,andStepanArkadyevitchlunchedwithhimandstayedon,sothatitwasfouro’clockbeforehegottoAlexeyAlexandrovitch.
