           “Well,Ididtry,youknow,”Levinsaidslowlyandunwillingly.“Ican’t!andsothere’snohelpforit.”

           “Butwhycan’tyou?ImustownIcan’tmakeitout.Indifference,incapacityIwon’tadmit;surelyit’snotsimplylaziness?”

           Hehadhardlygraspedwhathisbrotherwassaying.Lookingtowardstheploughlandacrosstheriver,hemadeoutsomethingblack,buthecouldnotdistinguishwhetheritwasahorseorthebailiffonhorseback.

           “Self-respect!”saidLevin,stungtothequickbyhisbrother’swords;“Idon’tunderstand.Ifthey’dtoldmeatcollegethatotherpeopleunderstoodtheintegralcalculus,andIdidn’t,thenpridewouldhavecomein.
