           Shehadrisentomeethim,notconcealingherpleasureatseeinghim;andinthequieteasewithwhichsheheldoutherlittlevigoroushand,introducedhimtoVorkuevandindicatedared-haired,prettylittlegirlwhowassittingatwork,callingherherpupil,Levinrecognizedandlikedthemannersofawomanofthegreatworld,alwaysself-possessedandnatural.

           “Iamdelighted,delighted,”sherepeated,andonherlipsthesesimplewordstookforLevin’searsaspecialsignificance.“Ihaveknownyouandlikedyouforalongwhile,bothfromyourfriendshipwithStivaandforyourwife’ssake....Iknewherforaveryshorttime,butsheleftonmetheimpressionofanexquisiteflower,simplyaflower.Andtothinkshewillsoonbeamother!”

           Shespokeeasilyandwithouthaste,lookingnowandthenfromLevintoherbrother,andLevinfeltthattheimpressionhewasmakingwasgood,andhefeltimmediatelyathome,simpleandhappywithher,asthoughhehadknownherfromchildhood.
