           StepanArkadyevitchhadlearnedeasilyatschool,thankstohisexcellentabilities,buthehadbeenidleandmischievous,andthereforewasoneofthelowestinhisclass.Butinspiteofhishabituallydissipatedmodeoflife,hisinferiorgradeintheservice,andhiscomparativeyouth,heoccupiedthehonorableandlucrativepositionofpresidentofoneofthegovernmentboardsatMoscow.ThisposthehadreceivedthroughhissisterAnna’shusband,AlexeyAlexandrovitchKarenin,whoheldoneofthemostimportantpositionsintheministrytowhosedepartmenttheMoscowofficebelonged.ButifKareninhadnotgothisbrother-in-lawthisberth,thenthroughahundredotherpersonagesbrothers,sisters,cousins,uncles,andauntsStivaOblonskywouldhavereceivedthispost,orsomeothersimilarone,togetherwiththesalaryofsixthousandabsolutelyneedfulforhim,ashisaffairs,inspiteofhiswife’sconsiderableproperty,wereinanembarrassedcondition.

           HalfMoscowandPetersburgwerefriendsandrelationsofStepanArkadyevitch.Hewasborninthemidstofthosewhohadbeenandarethepowerfulonesofthisworld.One-thirdofthemeninthegovernment,theoldermen,hadbeenfriendsofhisfather’s,andhadknownhiminpetticoats;anotherthirdwerehisintimatechums,andtheremainderwerefriendlyacquaintances.Consequentlythedistributorsofearthlyblessingsintheshapeofplaces,rents,shares,andsuch,wereallhisfriends,andcouldnotoverlookoneoftheirownset;andOblonskyhadnoneedtomakeanyspecialexertiontogetalucrativepost.
