           Beforetheendofthecourseofdrinkingthewaters,PrinceShtcherbatsky,whohadgoneonfromCarlsbadtoBadenandKissingentoRussianfriendstogetabreathofRussianair,ashesaidcamebacktohiswifeanddaughter.

           Theviewsoftheprinceandoftheprincessonlifeabroadwerecompletelyopposed.Theprincessthoughteverythingdelightful,andinspiteofherestablishedpositioninRussiansociety,shetriedabroadtobelikeaEuropeanfashionablelady,whichshewasnotforthesimplereasonthatshewasatypicalRussiangentlewoman;andsoshewasaffected,whichdidnotaltogethersuither.Theprince,onthecontrary,thoughteverythingforeigndetestable,gotsickofEuropeanlife,kepttohisRussianhabits,andpurposelytriedtoshowhimselfabroadlessEuropeanthanhewasinreality.

           Theprincereturnedthinner,withtheskinhanginginloosebagsonhischeeks,butinthemostcheerfulframeofmind.HisgoodhumorwasevengreaterwhenhesawKittycompletelyrecovered.ThenewsofKitty’sfriendshipwithMadameStahlandVarenka,andthereportstheprincessgavehimofsomekindofchangeshehadnoticedinKitty,troubledtheprinceandarousedhishabitualfeelingofjealousyofeverythingthatdrewhisdaughterawayfromhim,andadreadthathisdaughtermighthavegotoutofthereachofhisinfluenceintoregionsinaccessibletohim.Buttheseunpleasantmatterswerealldrownedintheseaofkindlinessandgoodhumorwhichwasalwayswithinhim,andmoresothaneversincehiscourseofCarlsbadwaters.
