           Hehadareadyappreciationofart,andprobably,withatasteforimitatingart,hesupposedhimselftohavetherealthingessentialforanartist,andafterhesitatingforsometimewhichstyleofpaintingtoselectreligious,historical,realistic,orgenrepaintinghesettoworktopaint.Heappreciatedallkinds,andcouldhavefeltinspiredbyanyoneofthem;buthehadnoconceptionofthepossibilityofknowingnothingatallofanyschoolofpainting,andofbeinginspireddirectlybywhatiswithinthesoul,withoutcaringwhetherwhatispaintedwillbelongtoanyrecognizedschool.Sinceheknewnothingofthis,anddrewhisinspiration,notdirectlyfromlife,butindirectlyfromlifeembodiedinart,hisinspirationcameveryquicklyandeasily,andasquicklyandeasilycamehissuccessinpaintingsomethingverysimilartothesortofpaintinghewastryingtoimitate.

           MorethananyotherstylehelikedtheFrenchgracefulandeffectiveandinthatstylehebegantopaintAnna’sportraitinItaliancostume,andtheportraitseemedtohim,andtoeveryonewhosawit,extremelysuccessful.
