           Hehadonlynottorefusethings,nottoshowjealousy,nottobequarrelsomeortakeoffense,allofwhichfromhischaracteristicgoodnatureheneverdid.Itwouldhavestruckhimasabsurdifhehadbeentoldthathewouldnotgetapositionwiththesalaryherequired,especiallyasheexpectednothingoutoftheway;heonlywantedwhatthemenofhisownageandstandingdidget,andhewasnoworsequalifiedforperformingdutiesofthekindthananyotherman.

           StepanArkadyevitchwasnotmerelylikedbyallwhoknewhimforhisgoodhumor,butforhisbrightdisposition,andhisunquestionablehonesty.Inhim,inhishandsome,radiantfigure,hissparklingeyes,blackhairandeyebrows,andthewhiteandredofhisface,therewassomethingwhichproducedaphysicaleffectofkindlinessandgoodhumoronthepeoplewhomethim.“Aha!Stiva!Oblonsky!Hereheis!”wasalmostalwayssaidwithasmileofdelightonmeetinghim.Eventhoughithappenedattimesthatafteraconversationwithhimitseemedthatnothingparticularlydelightfulhadhappened,thenextday,andthenext,everyonewasjustasdelightedatmeetinghimagain.

           AfterfillingforthreeyearsthepostofpresidentofoneofthegovernmentboardsatMoscow,StepanArkadyevitchhadwontherespect,aswellastheliking,ofhisfellow-officials,subordinates,andsuperiors,andallwhohadhadbusinesswithhim.
