           “Mercyonus!”andwithaheavysighthemarshaloftheprovincewalkedwithdowncastheadtothehightableinthemiddleoftheroom,hislegsstaggeringinhiswhitetrousers.

           Nevyedovskyhadscoredahighermajority,astheyhadplanned,andhewasthenewmarshaloftheprovince.Manypeoplewereamused,manywerepleasedandhappy,manywereinecstasies,manyweredisgustedandunhappy.Theformermarshaloftheprovincewasinastateofdespair,whichhecouldnotconceal.WhenNevyedovskywentoutoftheroom,thecrowdthrongedroundhimandfollowedhimenthusiastically,justastheyhadfollowedthegovernorwhohadopenedthemeetings,andjustastheyhadfollowedSnetkovwhenhewaselected.
