           Andinspiteofthefactthatscience,art,andpoliticshadnospecialinterestforhim,hefirmlyheldthoseviewsonallthesesubjectswhichwereheldbythemajorityandbyhispaper,andheonlychangedthemwhenthemajoritychangedthemor,morestrictlyspeaking,hedidnotchangethem,buttheyimperceptiblychangedofthemselveswithinhim.

           StepanArkadyevitchhadnotchosenhispoliticalopinionsorhisviews;thesepoliticalopinionsandviewshadcometohimofthemselves,justashedidnotchoosetheshapesofhishatandcoat,butsimplytookthosethatwerebeingworn.Andforhim,livinginacertainsocietyowingtotheneed,ordinarilydevelopedatyearsofdiscretion,forsomedegreeofmentalactivitytohaveviewswasjustasindispensableastohaveahat.Iftherewasareasonforhispreferringliberaltoconservativeviews,whichwereheldalsobymanyofhiscircle,itarosenotfromhisconsideringliberalismmorerational,butfromitsbeingincloseraccordancewithhismanneroflife.TheliberalpartysaidthatinRussiaeverythingiswrong,andcertainlyStepanArkadyevitchhadmanydebtsandwasdecidedlyshortofmoney.Theliberalpartysaidthatmarriageisaninstitutionquiteoutofdate,andthatitneedsreconstruction;andfamilylifecertainlyaffordedStepanArkadyevitchlittlegratification,andforcedhimintolyingandhypocrisy,whichwassorepulsivetohisnature.
