           “Mamanalwaysfindssomethingtobemiserableabout,”theysaidinthatglance.Theydidnotknowthathappyastheprincesswasinherdaughter’shouse,andusefulasshefeltherselftobethere,shehadbeenextremelymiserable,bothonherownaccountandherhusband’s,eversincetheyhadmarriedtheirlastandfavoritedaughter,andtheoldhomehadbeenleftempty.

           “Whatisit,AgafeaMihalovna?”KittyaskedsuddenlyofAgafeaMihalovna,whowasstandingwithamysteriousair,andafacefullofmeaning.

           “Aboutsupper.”

           “Well,that’sright,”saidDolly;“yougoandarrangeaboutit,andI’llgoandhearGrisharepeathislesson,orelsehewillhavenothingdoneallday.”

           “That’smylesson!No,Dolly,I’mgoing,”saidLevin,jumpingup.

           Grisha,whowasbynowatahighschool,hadtogooverthelessonsoftheterminthesummerholidays.DaryaAlexandrovna,whohadbeenstudyingLatinwithhersoninMoscowbefore,hadmadeitaruleoncomingtotheLevins’togooverwithhim,atleastonceaday,themostdifficultlessonsofLatinandarithmetic.Levinhadofferedtotakeherplace,butthemother,havingonceoverheardLevin’slesson,andnoticingthatitwasnotgivenexactlyastheteacherinMoscowhadgivenit,saidresolutely,thoughwithmuchembarrassmentandanxietynottomortifyLevin,thattheymustkeepstrictlytothebookastheteacherhaddone,andthatshehadbetterundertakeitagainherself.
