           Varenka,hearingKitty’svoiceandhermother’sreprimand,wentwithlight,rapidstepsuptoKitty.Therapidityofhermovement,herflushedandeagerface,everythingbetrayedthatsomethingoutofthecommonwasgoingoninher.Kittyknewwhatthiswas,andhadbeenwatchingherintently.ShecalledVarenkaatthatmomentmerelyinordermentallytogiveherablessingfortheimportanteventwhich,asKittyfancied,wasboundtocometopassthatdayafterdinnerinthewood.

           “Varenka,Ishouldbeveryhappyifacertainsomethingweretohappen,”shewhisperedasshekissedher.

           “Andareyoucomingwithus?”VarenkasaidtoLevininconfusion,pretendingnottohaveheardwhathadbeensaid.

           “Iamcoming,butonlyasfarasthethreshing-floor,andthereIshallstop.”

           “Why,whatdoyouwantthere?”saidKitty.

           “Imustgotohavealookatthenewwagons,andtochecktheinvoice,”saidLevin;“andwherewillyoube?”
