           Thenshewentuptoagentlemanwithglossypomadedhairparteddownthecenter,whowasstretchingacrossthefootlightsholdingoutsomethingtoher,andallthepublicinthestallsaswellasintheboxeswasinexcitement,craningforward,shoutingandclapping.Theconductorinhishighchairassistedinpassingtheoffering,andstraightenedhiswhitetie.Vronskywalkedintothemiddleofthestalls,and,standingstill,beganlookingabouthim.Thatdaylessthaneverwashisattentionturneduponthefamiliar,habitualsurroundings,thestage,thenoise,allthefamiliar,uninteresting,particoloredherdofspectatorsinthepackedtheater.

           Therewere,asalways,thesameladiesofsomesortwithofficersofsomesortinthebackoftheboxes;thesamegailydressedwomenGodknowswhoanduniformsandblackcoats;thesamedirtycrowdintheuppergallery;andamongthecrowd,intheboxesandinthefrontrows,weresomefortyoftherealpeople.AndtothoseoasesVronskyatoncedirectedhisattention,andwiththemheenteredatonceintorelation.

           Theactwasoverwhenhewentin,andsohedidnotgostraighttohisbrother’sbox,butgoinguptothefirstrowofstallsstoppedatthefootlightswithSerpuhovskoy,who,standingwithonekneeraisedandhisheelonthefootlights,caughtsightofhiminthedistanceandbeckonedtohim,smiling.

           VronskyhadnotyetseenAnna.Hepurposelyavoidedlookinginherdirection.Butheknewbythedirectionofpeople’seyeswhereshewas.
