           TheoldprinceembracedLevin,andtalkingtohimdidnotobserveVronsky,whohadrisen,andwasserenelywaitingtilltheprinceshouldturntohim.

           Kittyfelthowdistastefulherfather’swarmthwastoLevinafterwhathadhappened.Shesaw,too,howcoldlyherfatherrespondedatlasttoVronsky’sbow,andhowVronskylookedwithamiableperplexityatherfather,asthoughtryingandfailingtounderstandhowandwhyanyonecouldbehostilelydisposedtowardshim,andsheflushed.

           “Prince,letushaveKonstantinDmitrievitch,”saidCountessNordston;“wewanttotryanexperiment.”

           “Whatexperiment?Table-turning?Well,youmustexcuseme,ladiesandgentlemen,buttomyminditisbetterfuntoplaytheringgame,”saidtheoldprince,lookingatVronsky,andguessingthatithadbeenhissuggestion.“There’ssomesenseinthat,anyway.”

           Vronskylookedwonderinglyattheprincewithhisresoluteeyes,and,withafaintsmile,beganimmediatelytalkingtoCountessNordstonofthegreatballthatwastocomeoffnextweek.

           “Ihopeyouwillbethere?”hesaidtoKitty.Assoonastheoldprinceturnedawayfromhim,Levinwentoutunnoticed,andthelastimpressionhecarriedawaywithhimofthateveningwasthesmiling,happyfaceofKittyansweringVronsky’sinquiryabouttheball.
