           InspiteofallhissocialexperienceVronskywas,inconsequenceofthenewpositioninwhichhewasplaced,laboringunderastrangemisapprehension.OnewouldhavethoughthemusthaveunderstoodthatsocietywasclosedforhimandAnna;butnowsomevagueideashadsprungupinhisbrainthatthiswasonlythecaseinold-fashioneddays,andthatnowwiththerapidityofmodernprogress(hehadunconsciouslybecomebynowapartisanofeverysortofprogress)theviewsofsocietyhadchanged,andthatthequestionwhethertheywouldbereceivedinsocietywasnotaforegoneconclusion.“Ofcourse,”hethought,“shewouldnotbereceivedatcourt,butintimatefriendscanandmustlookatitintheproperlight.”Onemaysitforseveralhoursatastretchwithone’slegscrossedinthesameposition,ifoneknowsthatthere’snothingtopreventone’schangingone’sposition;butifamanknowsthathemustremainsittingsowithcrossedlegs,thencrampscomeon,thelegsbegintotwitchandtostraintowardsthespottowhichonewouldliketodrawthem.ThiswaswhatVronskywasexperiencinginregardtotheworld.Thoughatthebottomofhisheartheknewthattheworldwasshutonthem,heputittothetestwhethertheworldhadnotchangedbynowandwouldnotreceivethem.Butheveryquicklyperceivedthatthoughtheworldwasopenforhimpersonally,itwasclosedforAnna.Justasinthegameofcatandmouse,thehandsraisedforhimweredroppedtobarthewayforAnna.
