           Afterextremeunctionthesickmanbecamesuddenlymuchbetter.Hedidnotcoughonceinthecourseofanhour,smiled,kissedKitty’shand,thankingherwithtears,andsaidhewascomfortable,freefrompain,andthathefeltstrongandhadanappetite.Heevenraisedhimselfwhenhissoupwasbrought,andaskedforacutletaswell.Hopelesslyillashewas,obviousasitwasatthefirstglancethathecouldnotrecover,LevinandKittywereforthathourbothinthesamestateofexcitement,happy,thoughfearfulofbeingmistaken.

           “Ishebetter?”

           “Yes,much.”

           “It’swonderful.”

           “There’snothingwonderfulinit.”

           “Anyway,he’sbetter,”theysaidinawhisper,smilingtooneanother.

           Thisself-deceptionwasnotoflongduration.Thesickmanfellintoaquietsleep,buthewaswakeduphalfanhourlaterbyhiscough.Andallatonceeveryhopevanishedinthoseabouthimandinhimself.TherealityofhissufferingcrushedallhopesinLevinandKittyandinthesickmanhimself,leavingnodoubt,nomemoryevenofpasthopes.

           Withoutreferringtowhathehadbelievedinhalfanhourbefore,asthoughashamedeventorecallit,heaskedforiodinetoinhaleinabottlecoveredwithperforatedpaper.Levingavehimthebottle,andthesamelookofpassionatehopewithwhichhehadtakenthesacramentwasnowfastenedonhisbrother,demandingfromhimtheconfirmationofthedoctor’swordsthatinhalingiodineworkedwonders.
