           “Well,howishe?howishe?”

           “Verybad.Hecan’tgetup.Hehaskeptexpectingyou.He....Areyou...withyourwife?”

           Levindidnotforthefirstmomentunderstandwhatitwasconfusedher,butsheimmediatelyenlightenedhim.

           “I’llgoaway.I’llgodowntothekitchen,”shebroughtout.“NikolayDmitrievitchwillbedelighted.Heheardaboutit,andknowsyourlady,andremembersherabroad.”

           Levinrealizedthatshemeanthiswife,anddidnotknowwhatanswertomake.

           “Comealong,comealongtohim!”hesaid.

           Butassoonashemoved,thedoorofhisroomopenedandKittypeepedout.Levincrimsonedbothfromshameandangerwithhiswife,whohadputherselfandhiminsuchadifficultposition;butMaryaNikolaevnacrimsonedstillmore.
