           AlthoughLevinbelievedhimselftohavethemostexactconceptionsofdomesticlife,unconsciously,likeallmen,hepictureddomesticlifeasthehappiestenjoymentoflove,withnothingtohinderandnopettycarestodistract.Heought,asheconceivedtheposition,todohiswork,andtofindreposefromitinthehappinessoflove.Sheoughttobebeloved,andnothingmore.But,likeallmen,heforgotthatshetoowouldwantwork.Andhewassurprisedthatshe,hispoetic,exquisiteKitty,could,notmerelyinthefirstweeks,buteveninthefirstdaysoftheirmarriedlife,think,remember,andbusyherselfabouttablecloths,andfurniture,aboutmattressesforvisitors,aboutatray,aboutthecook,andthedinner,andsoon.Whiletheywerestillengaged,hehadbeenstruckbythedefinitenesswithwhichshehaddeclinedthetourabroadanddecidedtogointothecountry,asthoughsheknewofsomethingshewanted,andcouldstillthinkofsomethingoutsideherlove.Thishadjarreduponhimthen,andnowhertrivialcaresandanxietiesjarreduponhimseveraltimes.Buthesawthatthiswasessentialforher.And,lovingherashedid,thoughhedidnotunderstandthereasonofthem,andjeeredatthesedomesticpursuits,hecouldnothelpadmiringthem.HejeeredatthewayinwhichshearrangedthefurnituretheyhadbroughtfromMoscow;rearrangedtheirroom;hungupcurtains;preparedroomsforvisitors;aroomforDolly;sawafteranabodeforhernewmaid;ordereddinneroftheoldcook;cameintocollisionwithAgafeaMihalovna,takingfromherthechargeofthestores.
