           Hewasvaguelyawarethatitsdefects,inconspicuousatfirst,wouldbeglaringifheweretogoonwithit.ThesameexperiencebefellhimasGolenishtchev,whofeltthathehadnothingtosay,andcontinuallydeceivedhimselfwiththetheorythathisideawasnotyetmature,thathewasworkingitoutandcollectingmaterials.ThisexasperatedandtorturedGolenishtchev,butVronskywasincapableofdeceivingandtorturinghimself,andevenmoreincapableofexasperation.Withhischaracteristicdecision,withoutexplanationorapology,hesimplyceasedworkingatpainting.

           Butwithoutthisoccupation,thelifeofVronskyandofAnna,whowonderedathislossofinterestinit,struckthemasintolerablytediousinanItaliantown.Thepalazzosuddenlyseemedsoobtrusivelyoldanddirty,thespotsonthecurtains,thecracksinthefloors,thebrokenplasteronthecornicesbecamesodisagreeablyobvious,andtheeverlastingsamenessofGolenishtchev,andtheItalianprofessorandtheGermantravelerbecamesowearisome,thattheyhadtomakesomechange.TheyresolvedtogotoRussia,tothecountry.InPetersburgVronskyintendedtoarrangeapartitionofthelandwithhisbrother,whileAnnameanttoseeherson.ThesummertheyintendedtospendonVronsky’sgreatfamilyestate.
