           Butthedoorhadopenedmorethantentimes,andeachtimeitwaseitherabelatedguestorguests,whojoinedthecircleoftheinvitedontheright,oraspectator,whohadeludedorsoftenedthepoliceofficer,andwenttojointhecrowdofoutsidersontheleft.Boththeguestsandtheoutsidepublichadbynowpassedthroughallthephasesofanticipation.

           Atfirsttheyimaginedthatthebrideandbridegroomwouldarriveimmediately,andattachednoimportanceatalltotheirbeinglate.Thentheybegantolookmoreandmoreoftentowardsthedoor,andtotalkofwhetheranythingcouldhavehappened.Thenthelongdelaybegantobepositivelydiscomforting,andrelationsandgueststriedtolookasiftheywerenotthinkingofthebridegroombutwereengrossedinconversation.

           Theheaddeacon,asthoughtoremindthemofthevalueofhistime,coughedimpatiently,makingthewindow-panesquiverintheirframes.Inthechoirtheboredchoristerscouldbeheardtryingtheirvoicesandblowingtheirnoses.Thepriestwascontinuallysendingfirstthebeadleandthenthedeacontofindoutwhetherthebridegroomhadnotcome,moreandmoreoftenhewenthimself,inalilacvestmentandanembroideredsash,tothesidedoor,expectingtoseethebridegroom.Atlastoneoftheladies,glancingatherwatch,said,“Itreallyisstrange,though!”andalltheguestsbecameuneasyandbeganloudlyexpressingtheirwonderanddissatisfaction.Oneofthebridegroom’sbestmenwenttofindoutwhathadhappened.
