           AlexeyAlexandrovitchsmiledmournfully,lookedathisbrother-in-law,andwithoutansweringwentuptothetable,tookfromitanunfinishedletter,andhandedittohisbrother-in-law.

           “Ithinkunceasinglyofthesamething.AndhereiswhatIhadbegunwriting,thinkingIcouldsayitbetterbyletter,andthatmypresenceirritatesher,”hesaid,ashegavehimtheletter.

           StepanArkadyevitchtooktheletter,lookedwithincreduloussurpriseatthelusterlesseyesfixedsoimmovablyonhim,andbegantoread.

           “Iseethatmypresenceisirksometoyou.Painfulasitistometobelieveit,Iseethatitisso,andcannotbeotherwise.Idon’tblameyou,andGodismywitnessthatonseeingyouatthetimeofyourillnessIresolvedwithmywholehearttoforgetallthathadpassedbetweenusandtobeginanewlife.Idonotregret,andshallneverregret,whatIhavedone;butIhavedesiredonethingyourgood,thegoodofyoursoulandnowIseeIhavenotattainedthat.Tellmeyourselfwhatwillgiveyoutruehappinessandpeacetoyoursoul.Iputmyselfentirelyinyourhands,andtrusttoyourfeelingofwhat’sright.”

           StepanArkadyevitchhandedbacktheletter,andwiththesamesurprisecontinuedlookingathisbrother-in-law,notknowingwhattosay.ThissilencewassoawkwardforbothofthemthatStepanArkadyevitch’slipsbegantwitchingnervously,whilehestillgazedwithoutspeakingatKarenin’sface.
