           Hesawclearlythatalltheworldandhiswifeexpectedofhimsomething,butwhatexactly,hecouldnotmakeout.Hefeltthatthiswasrousinginhissoulafeelingofangerdestructiveofhispeaceofmindandofallthegoodofhisachievement.HebelievedthatforAnnaherselfitwouldbebettertobreakoffallrelationswithVronsky;butiftheyallthoughtthisoutofthequestion,hewasevenreadytoallowtheserelationstoberenewed,solongasthechildrenwerenotdisgraced,andhewasnotdeprivedofthemnorforcedtochangehisposition.Badasthismightbe,itwasanywaybetterthanarupture,whichwouldputherinahopelessandshamefulposition,anddeprivehimofeverythinghecaredfor.Buthefelthelpless;heknewbeforehandthateveryonewasagainsthim,andthathewouldnotbeallowedtodowhatseemedtohimnowsonaturalandright,butwouldbeforcedtodowhatwaswrong,thoughitseemedtheproperthingtothem.
