           Atfirst,fromafeelingofcompassionalone,hehadbeeninterestedinthedelicatelittlecreature,whowasnothischild,andwhowascastononesideduringhermother’sillness,andwouldcertainlyhavediedifhehadnottroubledabouther,andhedidnothimselfobservehowfondhebecameofher.Hewouldgointothenurseryseveraltimesaday,andsitthereforalongwhile,sothatthenurses,whowereatfirstafraidofhim,gotquiteusedtohispresence.Sometimesforhalfanhouratastretchhewouldsitsilentlygazingatthesaffron-red,downy,wrinkledfaceofthesleepingbaby,watchingthemovementsofthefrowningbrows,andthefatlittlehands,withclenchedfingers,thatrubbedthelittleeyesandnose.Atsuchmomentsparticularly,AlexeyAlexandrovitchhadasenseofperfectpeaceandinwardharmony,andsawnothingextraordinaryinhisposition,nothingthatoughttobechanged.

           Butastimewenton,hesawmoreandmoredistinctlythathowevernaturalthepositionnowseemedtohim,hewouldnotlongbeallowedtoremaininit.Hefeltthatbesidestheblessedspiritualforcecontrollinghissoul,therewasanother,abrutalforce,aspowerful,ormorepowerful,whichcontrolledhislife,andthatthisforcewouldnotallowhimthathumblepeacehelongedfor.Hefeltthateveryonewaslookingathimwithinquiringwonder,thathewasnotunderstood,andthatsomethingwasexpectedofhim.Aboveall,hefelttheinstabilityandunnaturalnessofhisrelationswithhiswife.
