           TheirconversationwasinterruptedbyMademoiselleLinon,whowithanaffectedbuttendersmilecametocongratulateherfavoritepupil.Beforeshehadgone,theservantscameinwiththeircongratulations.Thenrelationsarrived,andtherebeganthatstateofblissfulabsurdityfromwhichLevindidnotemergetillthedayafterhiswedding.Levinwasinacontinualstateofawkwardnessanddiscomfort,buttheintensityofhishappinesswentonallthewhileincreasing.Hefeltcontinuallythatagreatdealwasbeingexpectedofhimwhat,hedidnotknow;andhedideverythinghewastold,anditallgavehimhappiness.Hehadthoughthisengagementwouldhavenothingaboutitlikeothers,thattheordinaryconditionsofengagedcoupleswouldspoilhisspecialhappiness;butitendedinhisdoingexactlyasotherpeopledid,andhishappinessbeingonlyincreasedtherebyandbecomingmoreandmorespecial,moreandmoreunlikeanythingthathadeverhappened.

           “Nowweshallhavesweetmeatstoeat,”saidMademoiselleLinonandLevindroveofftobuysweetmeats.

           “Well,I’mveryglad,”saidSviazhsky.“IadviseyoutogetthebouquetsfromFomin’s.”

           “Oh,aretheywanted?”AndhedrovetoFomin’s.

           Hisbrotherofferedtolendhimmoney,ashewouldhavesomanyexpenses,presentstogive....

           “Oh,arepresentswanted?”AndhegallopedtoFoulde’s.

           Andattheconfectioner’s,andatFomin’s,andatFoulde’shesawthathewasexpected;thattheywerepleasedtoseehim,andpridedthemselvesonhishappiness,justaseveryonewhomhehadtodowithduringthosedays.
