           Hesnatchedthechalkwithnervous,tremblingfingers,andbreakingit,wrotetheinitiallettersofthefollowingphrase,“Ihavenothingtoforgetandtoforgive;Ihaveneverceasedtoloveyou.”

           Sheglancedathimwithasmilethatdidnotwaver.

           “Iunderstand,”shesaidinawhisper.

           Hesatdownandwrotealongphrase.Sheunderstooditall,andwithoutaskinghim,“Isitthis?”tookthechalkandatonceanswered.

           “You’replayingsecrétaire?”saidtheoldprince.“Butwemustreallybegettingalongifyouwanttobeintimeatthetheater.”

           LevingotupandescortedKittytothedoor.

           Intheirconversationeverythinghadbeensaid;ithadbeensaidthatshelovedhim,andthatshewouldtellherfatherandmotherthathewouldcometomorrowmorning.
