           Hiswholelifehadbeenspentinadministrativework,andconsequently,whenhedidnotapproveofanything,hisdisapprovalwassoftenedbytherecognitionoftheinevitabilityofmistakesandthepossibilityofreformineverydepartment.Inthenewpubliclawcourtshedislikedtherestrictionslaidonthelawyersconductingcases.Buttillthenhehadhadnothingtodowiththelawcourts,andsohaddisapprovedoftheirpublicitysimplyintheory;nowhisdisapprobationwasstrengthenedbytheunpleasantimpressionmadeonhiminthelawyer’swaitingroom.

           “Comingimmediately,”saidtheclerk;andtwominuteslatertheredidactuallyappearinthedoorwaythelargefigureofanoldsolicitorwhohadbeenconsultingwiththelawyerhimself.

           Thelawyerwasalittle,squat,baldman,withadark,reddishbeard,light-coloredlongeyebrows,andanoverhangingbrow.Hewasattiredasthoughforawedding,fromhiscravattohisdoublewatch-chainandvarnishedboots.Hisfacewascleverandmanly,buthisdresswasdandifiedandinbadtaste.

           “Praywalkin,”saidthelawyer,addressingAlexeyAlexandrovitch;and,gloomilyusheringKarenininbeforehim,heclosedthedoor.

           “Won’tyousitdown?”Heindicatedanarmchairatawriting-tablecoveredwithpapers.Hesatdownhimself,and,rubbinghislittlehandswithshortfingerscoveredwithwhitehairs,hebenthisheadononeside.Butassoonashewassettledinthispositionamothflewoverthetable.Thelawyer,withaswiftnessthatcouldneverhavebeenexpectedofhim,openedhishands,caughtthemoth,andresumedhisformerattitude.
