           Alookoffearcrossedhisface,butheregainedhisserenityimmediately.

           “MaryaNikolaevna?Why,whatfor?”

           Levinlistenedandrackedhisbrains,butcouldthinkofnothingtosay.Nikolayprobablyfeltthesame;hebeganquestioninghisbrotherabouthisaffairs;andLevinwasgladtotalkabouthimself,becausethenhecouldspeakwithouthypocrisy.Hetoldhisbrotherofhisplansandhisdoings.

           Hisbrotherlistened,butevidentlyhewasnotinterestedbyit.

           Thesetwomenweresoakin,soneareachother,thattheslightestgesture,thetoneofvoice,toldbothmorethancouldbesaidinwords.

           BothofthemnowhadonlyonethoughttheillnessofNikolayandthenearnessofhisdeathwhichstifledallelse.
