           “Yes,comealong,”answeredLevininecstasy,hearingunceasinglythesoundofthatvoicesaying,“Good-byetillthisevening,”andseeingthesmilewithwhichitwassaid.

           “TotheEnglandortheHermitage?”

           “Idon’tmindwhich.”

           “Allright,then,theEngland,”saidStepanArkadyevitch,selectingthatrestaurantbecauseheowedmoretherethanattheHermitage,andconsequentlyconsidereditmeantoavoidit.“Haveyougotasledge?That’sfirst-rate,forIsentmycarriagehome.”

           Thefriendshardlyspokealltheway.LevinwaswonderingwhatthatchangeinKitty’sexpressionhadmeant,andalternatelyassuringhimselfthattherewashope,andfallingintodespair,seeingclearlythathishopeswereinsane,andyetallthewhilehefelthimselfquiteanotherman,utterlyunlikewhathehadbeenbeforehersmileandthosewords,“Good-byetillthisevening.”

           StepanArkadyevitchwasabsorbedduringthedriveincomposingthemenuofthedinner.

           “Youliketurbot,don’tyou?”hesaidtoLevinastheywerearriving.

           “Eh?”respondedLevin.“Turbot?Yes,I’mawfullyfondofturbot.”
