           Onthewomanquestionhewasonthesideoftheextremeadvocatesofcompletelibertyforwomen,andespeciallytheirrighttolabor.Buthelivedwithhiswifeonsuchtermsthattheiraffectionatechildlesshomelifewastheadmirationofeveryone,andarrangedhiswife’slifesothatshedidnothingandcoulddonothingbutshareherhusband’seffortsthathertimeshouldpassashappilyandasagreeablyaspossible.

           IfithadnotbeenacharacteristicofLevin’stoputthemostfavorableinterpretationonpeople,Sviazhsky’scharacterwouldhavepresentednodoubtordifficultytohim:hewouldhavesaidtohimself,“afooloraknave,”andeverythingwouldhaveseemedclear.Buthecouldnotsay“afool,”becauseSviazhskywasunmistakablyclever,andmoreover,ahighlycultivatedman,whowasexceptionallymodestoverhisculture.Therewasnotasubjectheknewnothingof.Buthedidnotdisplayhisknowledgeexceptwhenhewascompelledtodoso.StilllesscouldLevinsaythathewasaknave,asSviazhskywasunmistakablyanhonest,good-hearted,sensibleman,whoworkedgood-humoredly,keenly,andperseveringlyathiswork;hewasheldinhighhonorbyeveryoneabouthim,andcertainlyhehadneverconsciouslydone,andwasindeedincapableofdoing,anythingbase.

           Levintriedtounderstandhim,andcouldnotunderstandhim,andlookedathimandhislifeasatalivingenigma.

           Levinandhewereveryfriendly,andsoLevinusedtoventuretosoundSviazhsky,totrytogetattheveryfoundationofhisviewoflife;butitwasalwaysinvain.
