           Whentheyreachedthehousehehelpedhertogetoutofthecarriage,andmakinganefforttomasterhimself,tookleaveofherwithhisusualurbanity,andutteredthatphrasethatboundhimtonothing;hesaidthattomorrowhewouldletherknowhisdecision.

           Hiswife’swords,confirminghisworstsuspicions,hadsentacruelpangtotheheartofAlexeyAlexandrovitch.Thatpangwasintensifiedbythestrangefeelingofphysicalpityforhersetupbyhertears.ButwhenhewasallaloneinthecarriageAlexeyAlexandrovitch,tohissurpriseanddelight,feltcompletereliefbothfromthispityandfromthedoubtsandagoniesofjealousy.

           Heexperiencedthesensationsofamanwhohashadatoothoutaftersufferinglongfromtoothache.Afterafearfulagonyandasenseofsomethinghuge,biggerthantheheaditself,beingtornoutofhisjaw,thesufferer,hardlyabletobelieveinhisowngoodluck,feelsallatoncethatwhathassolongpoisonedhisexistenceandenchainedhisattention,existsnolonger,andthathecanliveandthinkagain,andtakeinterestinotherthingsbesideshistooth.ThisfeelingAlexeyAlexandrovitchwasexperiencing.Theagonyhadbeenstrangeandterrible,butnowitwasover;hefeltthathecouldliveagainandthinkofsomethingotherthanhiswife.

           “Nohonor,noheart,noreligion;acorruptwoman.Ialwaysknewitandalwayssawit,thoughItriedtodeceivemyselftospareher,”hesaidtohimself.
