           Andbesides,hardthoughitwasforthemothertobearthedreadofillness,theillnessesthemselves,andthegriefofseeingsignsofevilpropensitiesinherchildrenthechildrenthemselveswereevennowrepayingherinsmalljoysforhersufferings.Thosejoysweresosmallthattheypassedunnoticed,likegoldinsand,andatbadmomentsshecouldseenothingbutthepain,nothingbutsand;butthereweregoodmomentstoowhenshesawnothingbutthejoy,nothingbutgold.

           Nowinthesolitudeofthecountry,shebegantobemoreandmorefrequentlyawareofthosejoys.Often,lookingatthem,shewouldmakeeverypossibleefforttopersuadeherselfthatshewasmistaken,thatsheasamotherwaspartialtoherchildren.Allthesame,shecouldnothelpsayingtoherselfthatshehadcharmingchildren,allsixofthemindifferentways,butasetofchildrensuchasisnotoftentobemetwith,andshewashappyinthem,andproudofthem.
