           Levinhadcomeacrossthemagazinearticlesaboutwhichtheyweredisputing,andhadreadthem,interestedinthemasadevelopmentofthefirstprinciplesofscience,familiartohimasanaturalsciencestudentattheuniversity.Buthehadneverconnectedthesescientificdeductionsastotheoriginofmanasananimal,astoreflexaction,biology,andsociology,withthosequestionsastothemeaningoflifeanddeathtohimself,whichhadoflatebeenmoreandmoreofteninhismind.

           Ashelistenedtohisbrother’sargumentwiththeprofessor,henoticedthattheyconnectedthesescientificquestionswiththosespiritualproblems,thatattimestheyalmosttouchedonthelatter;buteverytimetheywerecloseuponwhatseemedtohimthechiefpoint,theypromptlybeatahastyretreat,andplungedagainintoaseaofsubtledistinctions,reservations,quotations,allusions,andappealstoauthorities,anditwaswithdifficultythatheunderstoodwhattheyweretalkingabout.

           “Icannotadmitit,”saidSergeyIvanovitch,withhishabitualclearness,precisionofexpression,andeleganceofphrase.“IcannotinanycaseagreewithKeissthatmywholeconceptionoftheexternalworldhasbeenderivedfromperceptions.Themostfundamentalidea,theideaofexistence,hasnotbeenreceivedbymethroughsensation;indeed,thereisnospecialsense-organforthetransmissionofsuchanidea.
