           Fromtheuplandshecouldgetaviewoftheshadedcutpartofthemeadowbelow,withitsgrayishridgesofcutgrass,andtheblackheapsofcoats,takenoffbythemowersattheplacefromwhichtheyhadstartedcutting.

           Gradually,asherodetowardsthemeadow,thepeasantscameintosight,someincoats,someintheirshirtsmowing,onebehindanotherinalongstring,swingingtheirscythesdifferently.Hecountedforty-twoofthem.

           Levingotoffhismare,andfasteningherupbytheroadsidewenttomeetTit,whotookasecondscytheoutofabushandgaveittohim.

           “It’sready,sir;it’slikearazor,cutsofitself,”saidTit,takingoffhiscapwithasmileandgivinghimthescythe.

           Levintookthescythe,andbegantryingit.Astheyfinishedtheirrows,themowers,hotandgood-humored,cameoutintotheroadoneafteranother,and,laughingalittle,greetedthemaster.Theyallstaredathim,butnoonemadeanyremark,tillatalloldman,withawrinkled,beardlessface,wearingashortsheepskinjacket,cameoutintotheroadandaccostedhim.
