           ToKonstantinthepeasantwassimplythechiefpartnerintheircommonlabor,andinspiteofalltherespectandthelove,almostlikethatofkinship,hehadforthepeasantsuckedinprobably,ashesaidhimself,withthemilkofhispeasantnursestillasafellow-workerwithhim,whilesometimesenthusiasticoverthevigor,gentleness,andjusticeofthesemen,hewasveryoften,whentheircommonlaborscalledforotherqualities,exasperatedwiththepeasantforhiscarelessness,lackofmethod,drunkenness,andlying.Ifhehadbeenaskedwhetherhelikedordidn’tlikethepeasants,KonstantinLevinwouldhavebeenabsolutelyatalosswhattoreply.Helikedanddidnotlikethepeasants,justashelikedanddidnotlikemeningeneral.Ofcourse,beingagood-heartedman,helikedmenratherthanhedislikedthem,andsotoowiththepeasants.Butlikeordislike“thepeople”assomethingaparthecouldnot,notonlybecausehelivedwith“thepeople,”andallhisinterestswereboundupwiththeirs,butalsobecauseheregardedhimselfasapartof“thepeople,”didnotseeanyspecialqualitiesorfailingsdistinguishinghimselfand“thepeople,”andcouldnotcontrasthimselfwiththem.
