           Havinglearnedallthesefacts,theprincessfoundnothingtoobjecttoinherdaughter’sintimacywithVarenka,moreespeciallyasVarenka’sbreedingandeducationwereofthebestshespokeFrenchandEnglishextremelywellandwhatwasofthemostweight,broughtamessagefromMadameStahlexpressingherregretthatshewaspreventedbyherillhealthfrommakingtheacquaintanceoftheprincess.

           AftergettingtoknowVarenka,Kittybecamemoreandmorefascinatedbyherfriend,andeverydayshediscoverednewvirtuesinher.

           Theprincess,hearingthatVarenkahadagoodvoice,askedhertocomeandsingtothemintheevening.

           “Kittyplays,andwehaveapiano;notagoodone,it’strue,butyouwillgiveussomuchpleasure,”saidtheprincesswithheraffectedsmile,whichKittydislikedparticularlyjustthen,becauseshenoticedthatVarenkahadnoinclinationtosing.Varenkacame,however,intheeveningandbroughtarollofmusicwithher.TheprincesshadinvitedMaryaYevgenyevnaandherdaughterandthecolonel.
