           “Varenka,”Varenkaputinsmiling,“that’swhateveryonecallsme.”

           Kittyblushedwithpleasure,andslowly,withoutspeaking,pressedhernewfriend’shand,whichdidnotrespondtoherpressure,butlaymotionlessinherhand.Thehanddidnotrespondtoherpressure,butthefaceofMademoiselleVarenkaglowedwithasoft,glad,thoughrathermournfulsmile,thatshowedlargebuthandsometeeth.

           “Ihavelongwishedforthistoo,”shesaid.

           “Butyouaresobusy.”

           “Oh,no,I’mnotatallbusy,”answeredVarenka,butatthatmomentshehadtoleavehernewfriendsbecausetwolittleRussiangirls,childrenofaninvalid,ranuptoher.
