           Theyturnedtogoback,whensuddenlytheyheard,notnoisytalk,butshouting.Levin,stoppingshort,wasshoutingatthedoctor,andthedoctor,too,wasexcited.Acrowdgatheredaboutthem.TheprincessandKittybeatahastyretreat,whilethecoloneljoinedthecrowdtofindoutwhatwasthematter.

           Afewminuteslaterthecolonelovertookthem.

           “Whatwasit?”inquiredtheprincess.

           “Scandalousanddisgraceful!”answeredthecolonel.“TheonethingtobedreadedismeetingRussiansabroad.Thattallgentlemanwasabusingthedoctor,flingingallsortsofinsultsathimbecausehewasn’ttreatinghimquiteasheliked,andhebeganwavinghisstickathim.It’ssimplyascandal!”

           “Oh,howunpleasant!”saidtheprincess.“Well,andhowdiditend?”

           “Luckilyatthatpointthat...theoneinthemushroomhat...intervened.ARussianlady,Ithinksheis,”saidthecolonel.

           “MademoiselleVarenka?”askedKitty.

           “There,mamma,”saidKitty;“youwonderthatI’menthusiasticabouther.”

           Thenextday,asshewatchedherunknownfriend,KittynoticedthatMademoiselleVarenkawasalreadyonthesametermswithLevinandhiscompanionaswithherotherprotégés.Shewentuptothem,enteredintoconversationwiththem,andservedasinterpreterforthewoman,whocouldnotspeakanyforeignlanguage.

           KittybegantoentreathermotherstillmoreurgentlytolethermakefriendswithVarenka.
