           Shedrewbackfromhimwithaversion,andwithoutlookinginhisfaceanswered:

           “No,no,letmebe,I’llstay.”

           ShesawnowthatfromtheplaceofVronsky’saccidentanofficerwasrunningacrossthecoursetowardsthepavilion.Betsywavedherhandkerchieftohim.Theofficerbroughtthenewsthattheriderwasnotkilled,butthehorsehadbrokenitsback.

           OnhearingthisAnnasatdownhurriedly,andhidherfaceinherfan.AlexeyAlexandrovitchsawthatshewasweeping,andcouldnotcontrolhertears,noreventhesobsthatwereshakingherbosom.AlexeyAlexandrovitchstoodsoastoscreenher,givinghertimetorecoverherself.

           “ForthethirdtimeIofferyoumyarm,”hesaidtoherafteralittletime,turningtoher.Annagazedathimanddidnotknowwhattosay.PrincessBetsycametoherrescue.

           “No,AlexeyAlexandrovitch;IbroughtAnnaandIpromisedtotakeherhome,”putinBetsy.

           Annalookedaboutherinafrightenedway,gotupsubmissively,andlaidherhandonherhusband’sarm.

           “I’llsendtohimandfindout,andletyouknow,”Betsywhisperedtoher.

           Astheyleftthepavilion,AlexeyAlexandrovitch,asalways,talkedtothosehemet,andAnnahad,asalways,totalkandanswer;butshewasutterlybesideherself,andmovedhangingonherhusband’sarmasthoughinadream.

           “Ishekilledornot?Isittrue?Willhecomeornot?ShallIseehimtoday?”shewasthinking.
