           When,afterMahotinandVronskyhadclearedtheworstbarrier,thenextofficerhadbeenthrownstraightonhisheadatitandfatallyinjured,andashudderofhorrorpassedoverthewholepublic,AlexeyAlexandrovitchsawthatAnnadidnotevennoticeit,andhadsomedifficultyinrealizingwhattheyweretalkingofabouther.Butmoreandmoreoften,andwithgreaterpersistence,hewatchedher.Anna,whollyengrossedasshewaswiththerace,becameawareofherhusband’scoldeyesfixeduponherfromoneside.

           Sheglancedroundforaninstant,lookedinquiringlyathim,andwithaslightfrownturnedawayagain.

           “Ah,Idon’tcare!”sheseemedtosaytohim,andshedidnotonceglanceathimagain.

           Theracewasanunluckyone,andoftheseventeenofficerswhorodeinitmorethanhalfwerethrownandhurt.Towardstheendoftheraceeveryonewasinastateofagitation,whichwasintensifiedbythefactthattheTsarwasdispleased.
