           Ahawkflewhighoveraforestfarawaywithslowsweepofitswings;anotherflewwithexactlythesamemotioninthesamedirectionandvanished.Thebirdstwitteredmoreandmoreloudlyandbusilyinthethicket.Anowlhootednotfaroff,andLaska,starting,steppedcautiouslyafewstepsforward,andputtingherheadononeside,begantolistenintently.Beyondthestreamwasheardthecuckoo.Twicesheutteredherusualcuckoocall,andthengaveahoarse,hurriedcallandbrokedown.

           “Imagine!thecuckooalready!”saidStepanArkadyevitch,comingoutfrombehindabush.

           “Yes,Ihearit,”answeredLevin,reluctantlybreakingthestillnesswithhisvoice,whichsoundeddisagreeabletohimself.“Nowit’scoming!”

           StepanArkadyevitch’sfigureagainwentbehindthebush,andLevinsawnothingbutthebrightflashofamatch,followedbytheredglowandbluesmokeofacigarette.

           “Tchk!tchk!”camethesnappingsoundofStepanArkadyevitchcockinghisgun.

           “What’sthatcry?”askedOblonsky,drawingLevin’sattentiontoaprolongedcry,asthoughacoltwerewhinnyinginahighvoice,inplay.

           “Oh,don’tyouknowit?That’sthehare.Butenoughtalking!Listen,it’sflying!”almostshriekedLevin,cockinghisgun.

           Theyheardashrillwhistleinthedistance,andintheexacttime,sowellknowntothesportsman,twosecondslateranother,athird,andafterthethirdwhistlethehoarse,gutturalcrycouldbeheard.
