           “Don’tputyourselfout;weshallgetitalldoneintime.”

           Levinwavedhishandangrily,wentintothegranarytoglanceattheoats,andthentothestable.Theoatswerenotyetspoiled.Butthepeasantswerecarryingtheoatsinspadeswhentheymightsimplyletthemslidedownintothelowergranary;andarrangingforthistobedone,andtakingtwoworkmenfromthereforsowingclover,Levingotoverhisvexationwiththebailiff.Indeed,itwassuchalovelydaythatonecouldnotbeangry.

           “Ignat!”hecalledtothecoachman,who,withhissleevestuckedup,waswashingthecarriagewheels,“saddleme....”

           “Which,sir?”

           “Well,letitbeKolpik.”

           “Yes,sir.”

           Whiletheyweresaddlinghishorse,Levinagaincalledupthebailiff,whowashangingaboutinsight,tomakeitupwithhim,andbegantalkingtohimaboutthespringoperationsbeforethem,andhisplansforthefarm.

           Thewagonsweretobegincartingmanureearlier,soastogetalldonebeforetheearlymowing.Andtheploughingofthefurtherlandtogoonwithoutabreaksoastoletitripenlyingfallow.Andthemowingtobealldonebyhiredlabor,notonhalf-profits.Thebailifflistenedattentively,andobviouslymadeanefforttoapproveofhisemployer’sprojects.ButstillhehadthatlookLevinknewsowellthatalwaysirritatedhim,alookofhopelessnessanddespondency.Thatlooksaid:“That’sallverywell,butasGodwills.”

           NothingmortifiedLevinsomuchasthattone.Butitwasthetonecommontoallthebailiffshehadeverhad.
