           Butitappearedthatasthepaddockhadnotbeenusedduringthewinter,thehurdlesmadeintheautumnforitwerebroken.Hesentforthecarpenter,who,accordingtohisorders,oughttohavebeenatworkatthethrashingmachine.Butitappearedthatthecarpenterwasrepairingtheharrows,whichoughttohavebeenrepairedbeforeLent.ThiswasveryannoyingtoLevin.Itwasannoyingtocomeuponthateverlastingslovenlinessinthefarmworkagainstwhichhehadbeenstrivingwithallhismightforsomanyyears.Thehurdles,asheascertained,beingnotwantedinwinter,hadbeencarriedtothecart-horses’stable;andtherebroken,astheywereoflightconstruction,onlymeantforfeedingcalves.Moreover,itwasapparentalsothattheharrowsandalltheagriculturalimplements,whichhehaddirectedtobelookedoverandrepairedinthewinter,forwhichverypurposehehadhiredthreecarpenters,hadnotbeenputintorepair,andtheharrowswerebeingrepairedwhentheyoughttohavebeenharrowingthefield.Levinsentforhisbailiff,butimmediatelywentoffhimselftolookforhim.Thebailiff,beamingallover,likeeveryonethatday,inasheepskinborderedwithastrachan,cameoutofthebarn,twistingabitofstrawinhishands.

           “Whyisn’tthecarpenteratthethrashingmachine?”

           “Oh,Imeanttotellyouyesterday,theharrowswantrepairing.Hereit’stimetheygottoworkinthefields.”

           “Butwhatweretheydoinginthewinter,then?”

           “Butwhatdidyouwantthecarpenterfor?”

           “Wherearethehurdlesforthecalves’paddock?”

           “Iorderedthemtobegotready.
