           Inthedaytimeitthawedinthesun,butatnighttherewereevensevendegreesoffrost.Therewassuchafrozensurfaceonthesnowthattheydrovethewagonsanywhereofftheroads.Eastercameinthesnow.Thenallofasudden,onEasterMonday,awarmwindsprangup,stormcloudsswoopeddown,andforthreedaysandthreenightsthewarm,drivingrainfellinstreams.OnThursdaythewinddropped,andathickgrayfogbroodedoverthelandasthoughhidingthemysteriesofthetransformationsthatwerebeingwroughtinnature.Behindthefogtherewastheflowingofwater,thecrackingandfloatingofice,theswiftrushofturbid,foamingtorrents;andonthefollowingMonday,intheevening,thefogparted,thestormcloudssplitupintolittlecurlingcrestsofcloud,theskycleared,andtherealspringhadcome.Inthemorningthesunrosebrilliantandquicklyworeawaythethinlayeroficethatcoveredthewater,andallthewarmairwasquiveringwiththesteamthatroseupfromthequickenedearth.Theoldgrasslookedgreener,andtheyounggrassthrustupitstinyblades;thebudsoftheguelder-roseandofthecurrantandthestickybirch-budswereswollenwithsap,andanexploringbeewashummingaboutthegoldenblossomsthatstuddedthewillow.Larkstrilledunseenabovethevelvetygreenfieldsandtheice-coveredstubble-land;peewitswailedoverthelowlandsandmarshesfloodedbythepools;cranesandwildgeeseflewhighacrosstheskyutteringtheirspringcalls
